Folded steel Samurai Swords In the folded steel series, the grip construction features genuine ray skin covered wood, wrapped very tightly in the traditional pattern to display the ray skin and the menuki. The tsuba are meticulously crafted in traditional themes, which are repeated in the fuchi, kashira, and menuki. The deeply lacquered wood scabbards have authentic polished horn fittings and protective bag is supplied with each piece. The blades in this series are hand forged and folded from ASSAB-120C Swedish high carbon steel, which offers outstanding edge holding properties and is a much harder steel. The steel is folded 8-10 times. The edge-tempering process (clay firing) produces a edge hardness of RC60 and a back hardness of RC40. This allows for a hard cutting edge and a softer back to absorb the shock from the cutting stroke. After the blades are heat treated, they are then hand polished using traditional methods revealing the hamon line as well as the linear folding pattern giving each blade its own unique appearance. The samurai swords and Japanese swords have true hamon lines from the clay firing process.
